* Available at beauty supply stores, setting lotion saturates & plasticizes hair. Here is a recipie from the 1920s for setting lotion: Mix 1/4 c flax seed oil with one cup water. Boil on the stove until thickened, then strain the liquid into a jar. Add 3 drops of rosemary oil, and refrigerate.
1) Part hair as you normally would, making sure each side is combed flat against the head. Beginning on the side with more hair, comb down from the part about two inches, pulling the hair tigh along the way. Hold the comb so the teeth face upward, toward your part.
2) Place your finger above and parallel to the comb, over the center of the wave you are shaping. The teeth of the comb should still face your finger. Pull the comb down about 1/2 inch away from your finger, following the natural wave of the hair, keeping the comb straight and the teeth still facing your planted index finger. As you move the comb, penetrate every layer of hair down to the scalp.
3) With your index finger still firmly in place, move the comb strait up to meet it (again, penetrating all the layers), making a slight ridge in the hair. Direct the comb slightly forward along your index finger (toward your face) to lock hair in place. This will also secure the ridge and allow room between the comb and the ridge so you can create another wave. After you’ve secured the ridge, draw the comb through the rest of your hair.
4) Still holding the first ridge between your middle & ring fingers, create a second ridge below the first, following the same steps, only this time, direct the comb backward along your index finger away from your face, while th first wave is in place.
5) Continue to wave the hair, letting go of set waves and using wave clamps if absolutely necessary. Wave down from the part and then wave around the head, matching the direction of each wave, all the way around the head.
6) Loose pieces in front of the ear can be currled and pinned into a flat ringlet with a little setting lotion. For short hair, the ends can be wound around your finger and pinned flat against the head, creating a pin curl. For longer hair in the back, fashion yourself a bun to hold the non-fingerwaved hair.
7) Place hairnet over head & blow-dry thoroughly before combing it out. While your hair is drying, press in the waves more deeply. Once it’s dry, comb hair back from the face, pushing upward into the waves.
8) Spritz lightly with hairspray. Adorn with vintage clip or flower.
